We offer a range of computer and IT courses for beginner, intermediate and advanced users. Let Banksia Gardens Community Services keep you up to date with the ever-changing digital world.
Each course is designed to improve confidence in using technology and software applications. Our experienced IT teachers provide a supportive classroom environment to guide you through computer and mobile technologies.
At Banksia Gardens Community Services we also have a Computer Access Program that provides local residents with low-cost, high quality, second hand computers refurbished by our IT consultant.
Computers for beginners
Computers now play a large part in our lives and this program is an introduction for beginners to develop confidence in using a computer. Learn to use a computer in a friendly and supportive environment.
Learners will develop skills for Windows PC’s, using the internet, sending and receiving emails and Microsoft Word. Topics will include: physical components of the computer, Microsoft windows navigation, Microsoft Word basics to create a simple document and print the document, an introduction to the internet and develop keyboarding skills and explore various digital devices such as iPads and tablets.

Computers: intermediate
This course aims to provide the essentials of Microsoft Office. The course will familiarise learners with different types of software and utilities available on Microsoft Office Software Package.
This course is part of a computer literacy skills program and is targeted at unemployed people looking for, or returning to work, people want to upskill or refresh their knowledge, parents supporting schoolies for learning.

This program covers the practical use and language used in a range of digital technologies relevant to life and work in Australia. Using the latest software, Windows 10 and 11 and Microsoft Office 2016 and 2019. Learn keyboard shortcuts, toolbar, customized bullets, format painter, find and replace, inserting meaningful headers and footers, mail merge and save as a PDF.

MyGov
Introduction to Express Plus Centrelink Mobile App is a 15-hour course conducted over 5 days which will enable learners to understand how to interact with the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app to digitally manage their benefits, income reports, medicare records, view digital concession cards and gain skills in accessing and navigating the myGov website.

This course is for adult learners in need of developing their digital literacy skills to increase employment opportunities. Topics include using MS word App from Office 365 to format a resume, MS Outlook Online to manage emails for job applications, convert a document file as a pdf file, understand the file types, keywords in job applications, understand the job application process, installing job search Apps to a smart device, uploading/ sharing files, understand the login and logout process/account management for each App and Video resume making using online Apps.

Digital literacy and safety online
This program is designed to help learners understand the basics of various areas of technology, including different digital devices, their functionality and the ways people can use these devices to connect with others and access services over the Internet. Topics include using your smartphone, using SMS, connecting and working safely, navigating the Internet, using email, using social media. Using apps and software, everyday technology, staying safe online and much more.

Online communication platforms
The course targets adult learners in need of developing their digital literacy skills to increase chances of employment.
The topics aim to develop the learners’ active awareness of self as a digital user, and increase their knowledge, use, and application of digital literacy skills.
The modules are also informed by the Core Skills for Work document, particularly the Working in a Digital World performance features. The content of this program includes Office 365, OneDrive, Teams, Microsoft cloud-based programs and Zoom.

The course is for adult learners in need of developing their digital literacy skills to increase their chances of employment. Learners will have the opportunity to use digitally based technologies and systems to improve their job search skills. Topics include:
- introduction to the internet and basic search skills,
- how to search for information on the internet,
- online security,
- setting up a professional email account,
- using online job search engines,
- registering for job alerts and managing notification,
- and building a job seeker profile with job sites.

Phone and video interview skills
The course is for adult learners in need of developing their digital literacy skills to increase chances of employment.

- overview of interviews in general (online, phone and face to face),
- annunciation and pronunciation,
- clarifying information over the phone and note taking,
- troubleshooting,

Topics Include: basics of internet search, what is email and how does it work? Standard email layout, sending emails with attachments and group emails, introduction to email for work, types of work email accounts, adding email signatures and setting up an auto response, understanding the differences between use of work and personal emails, online safety and password protection, introduction to MS Outlook and its features, using the Microsoft Outlook Calendar and email setup on phone and other smart devices.
