We offer a range of computer and IT courses for beginner, intermediate and advanced users. Let Banksia Gardens Community Services keep you up to date with the ever-changing digital world.

Each course is designed to improve confidence in using technology and software applications. Our experienced IT teachers provide a supportive classroom environment to guide you through computer and mobile technologies.

At Banksia Gardens Community Services we also have a Computer Access Program that provides local residents with low-cost, high quality, second hand computers refurbished by our IT consultant.

Computers I: essentials

The course will begin with identifying basic components (and use) of computers such as the mouse, drives, keyboards, printers and monitors. You will learn how to word process using Microsoft Word. You will learn to create and save files, cut and paste, change font type, size and colour, move text, insert photos and more.  Students will become familiar with the keyboard and will also be briefly introduced to Internet and Email.

This course will provide students with a sound basis for further learning and keyboard skills for general computer usage.This course uses the latest software: Microsoft Office 2016 and Windows 10.

Computers II: intermediate

Extend your ability to use computers for work through this intermediate level program. The second course in our series of three progressively more challenging computer courses, this computer course builds on beginners’ skills to improve your knowledge and capacity with computers, in a nurturing environment. Students will be using Microsoft Office 2016 and Windows 10.  This course is aimed at adults of any age.

Computers III: advanced

Using the latest software, develop advanced skills in a range of Microsoft Office programs. Improve and enhance Microsoft Word skills: learn keyboard shortcuts, use the toolbar, customise bulletpoints, format painter, find and replace, inserting meaningful headers and footers, mail merge and save as a PDF.

With Excel, expand your knowledge of simple formulas and functions with cell referencing, create custom lists and more. Improve your understanding of Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2016.

All about myGov

“All about myGov” is an introduction to the Australian Government’s “myGov” website and its services. Increase your confidence in accessing and using online government services. Learn how to create an account and how to link member services to enable you access to government online accounts to your myGov account.

You will be guided to navigate myGov and use the following features: myGOV Inbox, myGOV Profile to update your details. You will also practise lodging a claim, viewing payment details, reporting income, accessing Medicare service and claiming rebates. You will learn about Job active reporting and requirements and how to access the Australian Taxation Office and lodge taxes.

Have you ever wondered how to connect to people and services online? This is the course for you: learn basic information about how to get connected on the Internet. 

You will learn to navigate, search and use the World Wide Web. From recogniseing secure sites and online scams, using internet auctions and shopping safely online. If you want to keep in touch with friends and family, read the news, follow your hobbies, watch your favourite TV programs, compare prices, pay bills and much, much more, enrol in this course!

Digital literacy for smart devices

Bring your own smart phone, iPad or tablet and gain an understanding of the features of these versatile devices.

Course content includes configuring settings, Email, web browsing, FaceTime/Skype, iMessage and Calendar. Discover everything you need to know about how to use your smart device. This course also covers online safety and helps improve your safety when using the internet, social media and other forms of digital technology. It will equip you with current information and provide links to quality resources and best-practice approaches for skills and behaviours of good digital citizenship.
